Reminder to self: practice slowly.

Playing fast and wrong over and over hoping to play it right the next time does not work. Slow down.

To Tell The Truth - Yoko Kanno - performed by Randy George, theremin

Behold a guy playing the theremin, an instrument I had heard of, but never before understand until I heard an old interview with Robert Moog, the inventor of the synthesizer and a guy whose company still builds theremins today. The theremin is an electronic instrument that uses electromagnetic fields that the musician controls by moving her hands without touching the instrument. I thought about buying one, but I understand it is a very difficult instrument to master.

1959 Fender guitar factory

I thought this was very interesting. Workers making Fender guitars in 1959. It makes me wonder about the stories of each of those old guitars after they left the factory, and the stories of those workers. How many are still alive? I will never know.

NO! Not a Cooper's Hawk. So much better.

The beautiful bird in the below post is not a Cooper's Hawk. It is a Peregrine Falcon! Here is the text of an email sent to me from Ray Brown, host of the weekly radio show, Ray Brown's Talkin Birds: Hi Tom, Thanks so much for sending that fine photo. I wonder, though, if you're sure about the ID--I'm thinking it's maybe an adult Peregrine Falcon (the head color, the color around the eye, the bill color, and the grey/black streaking on the lower breast and belly suggest that to me. Take a look at a photo of a Peregrine and see if you agree). Meanwhile, please send us your mailing address and we'll get a pound of Dean's Beans Birdwatcher's Blend coffee sent out to you. Thanks again, Tom, and best wishes, Ray

Oops. Sorry about that, bicycle. Also, what a nice song.

I was turning my bicycle over to clean the underside on Saturday evening, and I clumsily lost my grip and dropped the bike hard on what is called my stationary trainer. That bent one of the spokes on the back wheel so badly that the spoke pulled out of the wheel, splitting the metal rim and ruining the wheel. The guys at the Urban Shark bike shop came through for me again. The manager offered to split up a set of wheels and to sell me only the back one and at a reasonable price. The mechanic installed the new wheel in minutes, on a Sunday, and had me riding safely in time to get to the pub after lunch. The Urban Shark has been very good to me.
Click here to hear a really nice song. I learned the guitar chords, today, and they are beautiful. They sound to me like jazz chords.

Bike ride to St. Louis the hard way.

Hartford to Downtown St. Louis the Long Way

I rode a new route, today, to avoid riding what I am sure was a muddy stretch of my usual path along the east levee of the Chain of Rocks canal. Click here to see the route. On the map, click on Map Options and choose Satellite. You will see a little box in the upper right of the map that says 3D. Click on that box if you want to see a virtual flyover of the route.
