Trading Trees For Greenhouse Gases?

Does it make sense to let a power company in the United States pump an extra ton of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere to reward the power company for paying someone in Brazil to not cut down a tree? Part of me just wants us humans to hurry up and poison ourselves out of existence so that the rest of the species can be rid of us.
